Weight Loss Wednesday…Move it Move it!

I’m sure you know already, but you’re not going to lose weight by sitting on the couch eating potato chips. I have found that it’s quite amazing how just adding a little exercise to my day made a HUGE difference.

On my last adventure of losing “baby weight” I got board really fast with running on the treadmill and the elliptical. I was losing focus and my process on the scale had come to a standstill. Then I found Zumba! For those who haven’t caught on to the Zumba craze, it’s latin dance aerobics.

I thought I was in great shape until I went to my first class. Sweating, panting and feeling more uncoordinated and ungraceful than I have thus far in my life, I was counting down the seconds to the end of class. I really have to say I’ve never felt like such an ass in my life. The instructor was moving in ways my body just can’t move and I could only imagine how I must look. Of course, by my second class I noticed not only was I not alone in my “white girl” movements, but no one else cared one bit about what I was doing. The best part about the class is you can make subtle adjustments for your fitness level.

In a class that runs about an hour (including cool down), I burned on average 450 calories. You might be wondering how I know, I wear a heart rate monitor that calculates it for me.  When you do find a class in your area, I recommend wearing shoes that don’t grip too much. I wear old running shoes. My first class I wore my good running shoes and nearly popped my knee right out when my foot stopped and my leg kept going. You can also purchase special Zumba shoes. Check your local dance store for instant gratification.
