I had my Apple today!

27 Jan

Like most things, I was skeptical about switching from a PC to a Mac a few years back. I made fun of Bill when he first got his iPhone and was skeptical about how much I would actually use one myself. It didn’t take long for that skepticism to turn to love. I love my MacBook, it is the best computer I’ve ever owned. I never have any issues or crashes, it just works all the time. My iPhone is awesome even though I sometimes have some issues with AT&T’s service. Any time I have a bug with my iPhone, the “geniuses” at the Apple store make it all better without a headache. I was pretty sure when I heard the rumors about Apple’s latest “creation” it was something I would be interested in.

It seems fitting that Apple would make their big announcement on a “Wireless Wednesday”. Even more fitting that their next big thing should be available right around my birthday (in about 60 days). At 1pm today I sat on my couch squinting at the grainy live video taken by some tech geek in the audience of today’s BIG announcement. Coming soon, from Apple, the iPad!

The iPad is a touch screen, tablet style device with amazing capabilities. I can honestly say that at first glance, this has the potential to change everything. It looks a lot like it’s older brothers, iPhone and iTouch and apparently is going to work the same way, just on a larger scale.

A few iPad stats:

  • Size:
    • 9.56 inches high
    • 7.47 inches wide
    • .5 inches deep
    • 1.5-1.6 pounds (depending on model)
  • Capacity:
    • 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB
  • Battery life is 10 hours (while on WiFi, watching a movie or listening to music). I hear that in sleep mode the battery could last a month.
  • It syncs to your Mac or PC using a USB cable.
  • The Price (and man is the price right!)
    • Starting at $499 for 16GB, add $100 to that for 34GB and another $100 for the 64GB.
    • If you want your iPad with 3G capabilities (using AT&T wireless) add another $130 to each of those prices.
  • If you’re a bookworm, you’re going to to love iBook. Download from thousands of books to read right on your 9.7 inch display.
  • Have and iPhone or iTouch? All your apps will work on the iPad! Along with all the apps already in the app store that you have to choose from, special apps are being designed just for the iPad.
  • Going green? iPad can help!
    • Arsenic-free display glass.
    • BFR-free.
    • Mercury-free LCD display.
    • PVC-free.
    • Recyclable aluminum and glass enclosure.
    • All to reduce it’s environmental impact.
There are so many cool things about the iPad, I could be here all night. If you’re thinking the last thing you need is another toy, think again, this is no toy. Apple has come out with iWork (Keynote, Pages, and Numbers) to go with it. So you can create presentations, documents and or spreadsheets all on the go.

Personally, I have decided since I have an iPhone, I will not be getting a 3G model. I figure even though I will be carting this thing all over town, I’m usually around WiFi, and if I’m not I still have my trusty iPhone. I can tell you, my MacBook won’t be leaving the house again any time soon, I won’t need it to.

If you want to learn more about the iPad, go to Apple’s website. There’s a great video that runs down the features and a place where you can request they send you an email when the iPad is ready to order.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!
