24 days and counting.

10 Mar

Back in January, I told you how excited I was for the release of the newest “toy” from Apple, the iPad. I can say, almost two months later, I’m still excited. Originally, Apple said it would be out at the end of March. How perfect is that? It’s seemed like fate that it would be out just in time for my birthday.

Although I am a little disappointed that I won’t get to spend my 30th birthday playing with the latest gadget added to my arsenal, Apple finally announced that iPad will be available for purchase on April 3rd (the end of April for the 3G models). Exactly one week late for my special day, but I guess this year my birthday will just have to be extended. Oh darn!

Completely unprecedented for Apple, they are taking pre-orders starting March 12 (that’s in 2 short days). Insert excited squeak here.

I was cruising the iPad web site drooling over what’s to come and I did notice something I found slightly alarming for those of us counting the days till the iPad’s release. Waaaay down at the bottom of the page in tiny light grey font was the following, This device has not yet been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.
With just over three weeks until the launch, the FCC better get a move on with it’s authorization!

What do I hope to accomplish with my shiny new iPad?

I want to read more. Since the iPad will have an e-reader (like a Kindle only better), I plan to read more books and with any luck my favorite magazines will also be available on my iPad too.

I will print less recipes out on paper and simply put my iPad in my cookbook holder. Look at me being green by using less paper.

Get ready to see blogs created on my iPad. I’ll be able to take my blogging on the go much more easily; sure my MacBook is small, but I still don’t want to lug it all over town. Get ready to read blogs created in the pick up like at preschool. Ok, you probably won’t notice a difference, but I will when I’m using my time much more efficiently.

I will continue to fuel my facebook addiction. Need I say more about that?

I also plan on getting Pages and Numbers on my iPad so I can create documents and spread sheets. If you’re wondering what a stay at home mom needs to make spread sheets for, then you must not be a stay at home mom. With programs like Pages and Numbers I can keep my household even more organized and running smooth.

There a lot of things that I do on my iPhone that frustrate me in the small scale that I’m sure will be easier and more meaningful on a larger device.

For all the iPad naysayers out there, do not let your memory be short. Before the launch of the iPhone there were people out there who said it would never last, that it would be a failure of a device. Well people, that devise changed the way we use our phones and is now a top selling smartphone. Personally I think it would far surpass the Blackberry in sales if it were available on as many different networks as the Blackberry. I really think we are going to see a shift in the kind of devices we are using and the way we are using them in the post iPad era.

So I will  be waiting as patiently as I can for the next 24 days for my iPad. I plan on sending Bill out into the world on Friday to reserve my shiny little friend so I won’t (OK, let’s be honest here, so HE won’t) have to stand in line for hours if not days.

Look for my take on the iPad in my April 7th Wireless Wednesday.
