How I Saved Money Grocery Shopping

21 Feb

Two of my biggest tips for saving money at the grocery store have always been, don’t go hungry and don’t bring your kids. Both will help you avoid impulse buying and can slash your weekly grocery bill.

After today, I would like to amend one of those tips. If you want to save money at the grocery store, but all means, bring your kids!

For some reason I switched my weekly grocery shopping trip from Sunday (without children), to Monday with both boys. My thought was that it would kill some time and break up our day since Cameron was off from school. BIG MISTAKE!

Or was it? My usual grocery bill is between $75 and $100, today I spent $30. That’s some big savings!

Every time I would try to look at something, the boys would start with each other. Cameron didn’t want to walk, so he hung on to the from of the cart adding an extra 40 pounds and making it difficult to steer. We even had a temper tantrum mixed in there for good measure. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

In my haste to get the hell out of there I skipped half the store and missed a few things that I had mentally added to the list. I came home with half the bags I usually have and half my lunch. Got the duck sauce, forgot the egg rolls.

Although I saved a ton by taking the boys with me today, I can tell you I won’t be doing it again any time soon. It’s hard enough dodging the other shoppers, why should I make it any harder by adding my kiddos to the mix?
