Update: New Year’s Goals

My Life In Mommyland

Way back on New Year’s Day I set my goals for the New Year.

I wanted to take a minute to give an update on how I’m doing now that we’re halfway through the year.

Get my house in order.

The boxes are still in the basement unpacked. I think about them often but have not brought myself to the basement to get them unpacked. As far as the rest of the house goes, it seems to go in waves. I get an area clean and keep it clean for a while and then slowly it collects things until I clean it again. The time between cleanings gets longer every time, so that’s got to be a plus. I’m getting better with my desk area, I’ve been spending more time working there so it doesn’t get as messy before I get everything put a way or filed in the trash. Things are still getting away from me but I’m working everyday to get (and keep) this place in order.

Eat better.

OK, I’m starting to see a pattern here. My eating well seems to come in waves too. I eat salads and all the good for you stuff for a while and then I buy a bag of cookies and sit every night chowing down until there are nothing but crumbs left. I try to at least be conscious of what I’m eating and make healthy choices when I can. I’ve gotten in the habit of drinking more water and less soda and iced tea which has done wonders for my energy level since I’m not walking around dehydrated.

Make exercise a part of my life.

HA! Not doing very well with that one at all. I’m not even sure I’ve exercised at all since I set my New Year’s goals. I do try to make sure I at least get my 10,000 steps in everyday so it’s not like I’m being completely sedentary.

Be more fiscally responsible.

I think I probably jinxed myself by setting this goal. While I’ve been working hard to get us out of debt and get some money saved away, I’ve had a record year for not getting things paid on time. I’ve lost bills, forgotten them, or thought Bill was paying them. Things haven’t been too late, I haven’t had any collection calls (yet), but a few days here and there. Our tax return wasn’t nearly as big as it’s been the past few years so I wasn’t able to pay down as much as I would have like but I’m making a dent.

Where I have been pretty successful is in the impulse buy department. I’m not spending nearly as much on the stupid stuff and what I do buy I work hard to buy on sale and use coupons.

Blog more consistently.

FInally, something I’ve been fairly successful with this year. Especially in the past couple of months I’ve been able to get out 3 or 4 posts a week. Not too shabby considering I had gone for weeks without a post for a while there.

In April I had Mommyland redesigned and after nearly three years, I finally have a site I can be proud of. That alone has done wonders for me, I actually want to write more since my site is so cool looking.

I hope you’ve enjoyed all I’ve had to say this year!

Be a better mom.

Yes, I’m a yelling mommy and I hate myself for it.

This year I’m really trying to be more mindful what comes out of my mouth and the volume at which it comes out. I’ve been able to go for days without yelling at all. It’s amazing how much more relaxed I feel at the end of the day when I make it through without raising my voice.

One thing I have noticed is that the boys do much better when we are out on an adventure than they do at home, so I’m trying to get them out everyday.

I still have a lot of work in this department, but like everything else, I’m making progress.

How are you doing with your New Year’s Goals? Have you been able to accomplish what you’ve set out to do so far this year?
