Kids Are Jerks

22 Jan

Cameron is one of the more pure hearted kids I’ve ever seen. He’s so innocent it’s almost laughable.

He doesn’t give a whole lot of thought to what other people are going to think about something he does, likes, or wears and I actually kind of admire him for that.

Last week my Mom bought each of the boys one of those Flipeez hats, and I’ve never seen them get so excited about an article of clothing.

They both LOVED their hats and it was difficult to get them off their heads when it was time for bed.

Cameron was so excited to wear his to school and he looked adorable all bundled up with his monkey on his head.

As the bus pulled away I went to wave goodbye and noticed that the little girl who sits in front of him was reaching over the seat and Cameron was ducking down to try and escape her. I just rolled my eyes and went about my day.

When it was time to get Cameron off the bus he wasn’t wearing his hat. I asked him where it was, since he usually leaves things behind at school. Thankfully it was in his backpack. Again, I didn’t think too much of it and went about my day.

Later that evening we were headed out and I told him to put his hat on. That’s when it came out. He refused saying it looks dumb on him.

Where the hell did that come from?

Someone at school told him that and now something he loves has lost its luster. Whatever happened to, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”?

Bill and I spent the better part of the evening trying to undo what that little brat at school had done. We reassured Cameron that he doesn’t look stupid in the hat and that if he really likes something that’s all that matters, NOT what other people think of it.

He eventually came around and has been wearing the hat again. Here’s the thing though, he hasn’t been back to school again since this happened. With any luck they’ll be back to school tomorrow and that’s when we’ll see just how well our talk with Cameron went.

Has anything like this ever happened to your kids? How did you deal with it?
