Buh Bye Boot

20 Sep

Nine weeks ago I went in for ankle surgery. I went into it not really knowing what to expect and every step of the way things didn’t go the way I thought they would.

My latest appointment was earlier this week and I finally received the news I felt would never come, I don’t have to wear the boot anymore. I can say that was probably the best news I’ve ever received and as soon as I walked out of the office I felt like I had been freed from prison. The air smelled just a little bit sweeter.

Of course I forgot to grab my shoe before I left the house so I had to leave in the boot, but at least I knew I only had minutes to go.

It’s not over yet, I still have four to six weeks of physical therapy to go but I’m confident I’ll be lacing up those running shoes again by November 1st…If not sooner.

For now gaining my independence is the best part. I hadn’t driven since July 16th and depending on family for rides was getting old. I know Bill and my parents didn’t really mind but I hated to have them stop what they were doing to take me to work or the grocery store.

That first solo drive with the music blasting and the sunroof open was pure bliss. Just another step to feeling whole again.

Physical therapy has begun and already, after two sessions, I can feel a major difference in the range of motion. Each day things feel a little less tight and strained. Each day my limp gets a little less pronounced. Each day I’m feeling stronger than the day before.

I know I have a long way to go but I’m confident I’ll get it all back and then some.

Have you ever had to deal with coming back from a lengthy injury? Tell me about it.
