Fitness Fun (Volume 2)

17 May

Well, I have ten days of exercising under my belt. I have to say that each day I was able to drag my butt out of bed was a miracle. There were mornings, much like this morning, that were dark and grey that I just wanted to stay comfy under the covers. I can now say I’m 1/3 of the way through my 30 day challenge. I’ve never actually been able to finish a 30 day challenge, so when (not if) I finish this time it will be a first and a major achievement in my book.

I’ve been asked if I’m going to take a day off. My answer is, probably not. Right now I’m working to be consistent, if I were to take a day off now it’s likely to turn into more than one day. I work different parts of my body everyday, so I’m not too concerned with injury. I also have goals I would like to achieve, and I don’t want to risk not meeting those goals. So no days off for me in the foreseeable future.

I did treat myself to a new “game” for Wii this week, Zumba. I’ve only tried it once, but so far it’s pretty cool. It appeals to my competitive side by making me earn my way through levels by doing the moves right. I made it to the bonus round last time. :-D Like the Zumba classes at the gym, it gets the heart rate up and the blood pumping, but it is a bit harder to follow than the live instructor. There are a lot of the same moves we did at the gym, so it was a little easier to follow along than if I had never had experience with Zumba.

I feel like I should be working a little harder. Sure, I’m doing the programed workout each day, but I’m not burning a whole heck of a lot of calories. I’m also not feeling like the workout kicked my ass when I’m done anymore. The problem is that I don’t know how to fit more time in. It’s clear that exercising once the boys are awake is NOT going to happen, but I don’t know if I can physically wake up a half an hour earlier to add a daily elliptical run to my day. OK moms, how do you get your workouts in with the little ones running around?

OK, down to the nitty gritty, how did I do in my first ten days?

In my first five days I was down three pounds, which was awesome to see. At the ten day mark I’m only down one pound from my starting weight. I think there are two things that contributed to my less than stellar weight loss. First, muscle weighs more than fat and I’m sure I’m gaining muscle here. Second, I had a bad weekend for eating, there was a lot of eating out and crappy food involved in my weekend. All my measurements (waist, hips and neck) have remained static for the first ten days. Normally that would have me giving up, but not this time. I will not give up!

My fitness watch has a Fitness Test feature that can show me my level of fitness from very low to elite. I took the fitness test at the beginning of this adventure and I will take the test each week to help track my progress. When I began, my result was a 32 which is in the mid range of the “fair” fitness level. After one week, my number went up to 33 which is only one away from being in moderate physical condition. There’s a whole chart for me to follow, but basically the higher the number, the better physical shape. My goal is to get to the low to mid forties by July.

I haven’t really started to focus on what I’m eating, which I know is a huge part of loosing weight and being healthy. I’m just not ready for all that yet. I have started to be more mindful of what I eat though, trying to cut down or cut out some of the crappier things and trying to add more of the good stuff. There are some things that I’m not willing to give up, so I’m trying to eat them in moderation instead of strapping on a feed bag. I’ve been doing really well in the water department, drinking 9-15 cups of water a day. I’m also doing well with sleeping, which is the often forgotten piece of being healthy. I haven’t had to take Tylenol PM in about a week and I’ve been sleeping just fine.

All in all, I think I’ve made a good start. See you next time.
