The Mommyland Farm (Volume 20)

8 Aug

Attack of the killer pumpkins.

About six weeks ago I gave you a little peek at our pumpkins. They were taking over the entire bed and choking out everything in their path.

Well, not much has changed and they continue to amaze me with just how big they are getting. Last week Bill even cut them back since they had taken over part of the lawn.

The top part of the photo below was the pumpkin six weeks ago and the bottom part is now. It’s grown quite a bit hasn’t it?

My Life In Mommyland

The white roses I was so worried about are gone. I’m wondering if they’ll make a come back next year when we DON’T plant a gigantic man eating pumpkin plant there? There was actually a vine that grew through one of my pink rose bushes. Who knew pumpkins were so ruthless?!?

We’ve had to trim back some of the vines that were growing near the steps since they were starting to make using the steps dangerous. Just about the entire wall has been covered in pumpkiny vines. I swear, I wouldn’t be surprised if I woke up one morning and found my house completely incased in pumpkin vines.

The Wall

Look at those vines just dangling, another week and they’ll reach the driveway.

My Life In Mommyland

It’s hard to see where it all began.

I guess I really can’t complain since there are already twelve pumpkins and more little buds to come. By the time fall gets here I’m going to be like Bubba from Forrest Gump…Pumpkin pie, pumpkin soufflĂ©, pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, baked pumpkin, spiced pumpkin…

We are going to save a ton on the trip to the pumpkin patch. Just the hayride for us thanks!

Have you ever grown your own pumpkins? Did it work out well for you?

The Mommyland Farm (Volume 19)

The return of my four legged foes.

The squirrels, groundhogs and rabbits have finally lost interest in the garden…I think. I haven’t seen them in there for a while anyway.

Of course it’s never as easy as they lose interest and the woodland creatures stop eating my garden. Nope, it never works like that. The small furry creatures lost interest and the deer have made a come back.

My Life In Mommyland

There used to be more plant there.

Our tomato plants are huge and they are close to the fence on the one side. It’s the perfect hight for the deer to reach their long necks over the fence and nibble away on my tomatoes. SERIOUSLY?!?

First the mama stopped by for a snack, then she brought her babies.

THIS IS NOT YOUR PERSONAL SALAD BAR!

My Life In Mommyland

Mmmm, tasty leaves.

I’m seriously considering electrifying the fence for next year. Come near my garden and ZAP! you’re knocked into next week.

Thankfully it would appear that they haven’t done too much damage (yet) and I’ve been chasing them away whenever I catch them out there. I’m still wishing I could handle the air riffle, a little shot to the butt would probably do the trick. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to keep yelling at them like a crazy person and running out into the yard.

Do you have pesky woodland creatures making a meal out of your garden? What are you doing to keep them away?
