My name is Mychal…

…And I’m a shopaholic! I think I’ve always been one too. It must be hereditary, because my Mom is a shopaholic too. It wasn’t too long ago that I carried 12 credit cards in my wallet. Incase you don’t know, those cards stay on your credit report for a loooong time. They might not count against me anymore, but they make my credit report about 5 pages long. Since we’re just a few short days away from 2010, I thought I would make my New Year’s Resolution. In 2010, I am going to be more fiscally responsible.

As crazy as it sounds, I have actual withdrawal symptoms when I haven’t shopped in a while. My weekly trips to Giant aren’t enough to sooth the savage beast inside me. It’s the treats I need. Before moving to Mommyland, I used to treat myself to all kinds of goodies. Now that there are children to buy for, buying them all kinds of goodies usually quenches my thirst to spend. The result, a house full of toys we don’t need. If I go too long without shopping I actually get irritable and depressed.

For the new year, and beyond I am going to try to resist my primal urge to spend. I’m not sure how I’m going to do it, but I will not make impulse purchases. I will separate my wants from needs. Of course it goes without saying, I will continue to use and maximize coupons whenever and wherever possible. I know this is not going to be easy, but I need to pull it together so we have the money to do the things we want to do. I never want to be caught off guard by unexpected bills ever again.

I’m hoping that by picking up a hobby, I have something to take my mind off of my need to shop. I’ll keep you posted about my successes and failures. Wish me luck as I tip toe into the new year, holding my breath hoping I can pull this off.
