What was old is new again.

I love my dishes. I picked them out over 6 years ago and still really like them. I like them so much that I have a service for 12 plus EVERY serving piece that was made, matching napkins and even a matching throw rug. My dishes do have a problem though; over the years they’ve gotten some nasty gray scratches on them.

Since the pattern has been discontinued, I had just resigned myself to the fact that I was going to have to pick a new pattern and move on. That was until I was given this helpful hint and found that it works really well.

First you should know what those gray marks are, so I am here to tell you. OK, I’m here to tell you what I was told they were. They are the nickel from your flatware coming off on the plate. Why does this happen? Partly because dish companies don’t use lead based glazes anymore (again, that’s what I was told by the salesman at Noritake).

Barkeeper’s Friend. I had used it before to get burt on crust off the bottoms of my pots and pans, but had never thought to use it on my dishes. I guess that’s just because I didn’t really know what the gray scratches were until now. So I got down to business on my dishes to see if this could really work when all the scrubbing I had tried had never made a difference.

I took a few pictures of before and after so I could see if there really was a difference. Please excuse the poor quality of the pictures, I have no clue where my camera is so I used my iPhone. I think you’ll still be able to see a marked difference from before to after.

You can tell from the dinner plate that it didn’t get rid of all the marks, but it did make a positive difference. The marks had all but disappeared off the salad plate.
The Barkeeper’s Friend was really easy to use, but it does smell bad. All I did was get the plate wet, then use a wet sponge to scrub. I rinsed them off and tossed them in the dishwasher for a quick cycle to get all the grit off.
If you have these unsightly gray marks on your dishes, give Barkeeper’s Friend and let me know what you think. Have you tried something else to get rid of those marks? I would love to try your remedy myself.
