Save money on groceries.

3 May

I’m often guilty of not following this little tip, but I know that if you do follow it, it can really work wonders.

Eat BEFORE you head out the the grocery store. It sounds silly to some, but if you just think about it for a second, it makes perfect sense. Do you really think it’s a great idea to go to a place full of food if you’re hungry? Or even have a small case of the munchies?

I try very hard to stick to buying only the items on my list and I find that a whole lot harder if everything I see is calling out for me to eat it. I haven’t actually done a study on the effects of going to the store on a full stomach, but thinking about it, I would say I spend about $10-$20 less when I’m not hungry. I do a major grocery run once a week, so even $10 more can add up in a year’s time.

This tip isn’t only for trips to the grocery store. Don’t go hungry to places like Target or warehouse clubs like Sam’s or BJ’s. Being hungry in a warehouse club can be disastrous for your wallet.

This money saving tip has a double bonus too. If you are well fed before you go grocery shopping you are less likely to pick up junk food while you’re out. Let’s face it, if you go to the store hungry, you’re probably not going to pick a healthy snack while walking amongst all those tasty, sugary and or salty treats. Your hips will thank you.

If you have to take the kids with you grocery shopping, definitely make sure they’re fed. There is nothing worse than a hungry kid in a grocery store. Before you know it, you’ll be pulling over to the bakery to give them a donut; I’ve seen it a hundred times.
