Nothing is safe from my children.

25 May

Just another day here in Mommyland, and my boys are at it again.

Our basement is mostly finished and we’ve made it into the (little) Man Cave. It truly is a room with an identity crisis, amid the disaster of toys and kid’s crap sits a granite topped bar, and the walls are covered in chalk (thanks Logan) and various golf artifacts. Mostly it’s a playroom, the place where all the toys have been banished to.

The boys were playing downstairs after breakfast, just like any other morning. I would occasionally have to go down and break up a fight over one thing or another, just like any other morning. What was not like any other morning was what I found when I went to check on them, after an extended period of quiet. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a room with quiet kids is much worse than a room full of noisy ones. When they’re quiet, 9 out of 10 times they are up to something.

I find Logan in the little hallway to the bathroom with a screwdriver in one hand and a wire in the other. Oh joy, my own little Handy Manny. Now I don’t want you to think I’m a bad mother who leaves screwdrivers and wires just laying around in the playroom…I am NOT. The only place I keep that kind of stuff down there is in the LOCKED liquor cabinets.

WHAT? Did I just say LOCKED liquor cabinets?

I sure did. My children broke into the cabinets…All three of them.

Get the picture of my kids finding just the right sized toy to pick the lock out of your head, it didn’t happen like that. Someone, it’s still not clear who, moved the bar stool that sits behind the bar over to the wall. Once there it was a simple climb to the top and a quick reach up to the shelf where the keys were kept. WERE kept. I really didn’t think I needed to hide the keys to the liquor cabinets from my 2 and 5 year olds, I thought I had a few more years until they were going to be breaking in. I honestly didn’t know they even knew where the keys were or what was inside the locked cabinets. They really never bother with behind the bar since it is a forbidden place. I guess I thought wrong.

In light of these recent events, I’m left to wonder…What are those two going to be like in ten more years?
