The Mommyland Farm (Volume 14)

14 Jun

We’re still waging war on the pests.

Last week I told you how the furry creatures were chewing through the fence to get into our tasty crop. Bill was able to mend the holes in the fence and so far it doesn’t appear that they are trying to get back through.

We’re still having issues with the squirrels though. I caught one in there the other morning and when I went to chase him out I was shocked when he didn’t go over the fence, he went under.

You have GOT to be kidding me!

Squirrels climb trees for a living and instead of climbing the rails to get in and out they dug under, making way for all their furry woodland friends. Can we buy a break this year?

I’ll be out there later today to fill in the hole and pack it tight. I’m hoping they’re not smart enough to keep trying. I totally understand how Elmer Fudd felt now.

At least once they get in they only seem interested in the back two beds, the peas (which are already toast) and the cucumbers. The cucumbers are trying to overcome being eaten alive. Since they need those big, beautiful leaves to get the energy to produce the cucumber and all the big leaves have been eaten, we’re not expecting too much. Really any cucumbers we get will be a victory.

Ending on a positive note.

The plants that haven’t been a part of the all day buffet are thriving. It looks as though we’ll have a great crop of both the beef steak and cherry tomatoes. I can’t wait for them to be ready, my mouth is watering for some homemade salsa.

There’s also a lot of beauty on The Mommyland Farm. Seeing that much life, so green and lush, well it just kind of makes me smile. I had no idea that a potatoes were so pretty above ground. I took that dirt covered spud for granted.

I’m not going to let those furry bastards get me down. More importantly, I will NOT let them win.

What do you have growing in your garden this year?
