The Mommyland Farm (Volume 16)

24 Jun

We ran out of room on The Mommyland Farm for the pumpkins so we planted them on the side of the house in a little garden. I have to admit, that while I’ve been pumpkin picking before I’ve never realized how big one tiny little plant can get. We planted this little thing in the spring and I really didn’t think it would be too much bigger.

The Mommyland Farm

I can honestly say I was only expecting maybe a pumpkin or two to grow on this little plant.

Man was I wrong!

While no one was looking or paying much attention that pumpkin plant exploded in the garden. I swear, one day it was that tiny little guy you see above and the next day it was this monster…

The Mommyland Farm

So whose brilliant idea was it to plant this thing here? Not mine! At this rate it’ll have the whole bed and half the backyard covered by fall.

Have you ever seen the movie Little Shop of Horrors? I’m pretty sure that I’m going to go out there one morning and get eaten by this thing.

As you can see by the photo our pumpkin plant has no fence around it and it completely out where the animals can get to it, yet noting has touched it. Meanwhile I have woodland creatures doing all but parachuting into the garden to eat the other veggies.

Only in Mommyland.

This killer pumpkin plant isn’t just taking over the whole bed, it’s actually creating pumpkins. Who knew? There are little tiny pumpkins all up and down the vine, so I’m hopeful we’ll be able to to the pumpkin picking in our own backyard this year.

My Life In Mommyland

The biggest of our little pumpkins.

Isn’t it cute? Like a man with a funny hat.

While I’m super excited to have a successful pumpkin plant I’m a little worried about what it means for everything else in that bed. We planted it there because we underestimated just how big it would get and now it’s threatening everything else in it’s path. There are a few bush type things in there that I really don’t care much for but I also have three rose bushes. I love my roses. The pumpkins are already trying to choke out my lone white rose bush and they’re moving in on the other two.

My Life In Mommyland

Skip the lines at the pumpkin patch this year, I’ll give you a good deal on a pumpkin!

Have you ever underestimated how big something in your garden would grow?

Finally some color!

I love green just as much as the next girl but it’s nice to see some red popping out on The Farm.

I was told that the tomatoes like the heat and with the latest heat wave we’ve been having they’ve been bursting with color. Of course Logan is eating the cherry tomatoes faster than they’re turning red but he can’t eat them all…Can he?

The Mommyland Farm

Little Red tomatoes hiding from me.

I have been waiting for what feels like an eternity for the big tomatoes to grow. Mmmmm, tomatoes and mozzarella, salsa, salads, the possibilities are limitless. I was so excited to see a few big, red beefsteaks among the green.

The Mommyland Farm

The beefsteaks are turning red!

The peppers need some sunscreen!

The tomatoes aren’t the only things out there that are taking off in this heat, the peppers are popping out all over the place. We have so many big, beautiful peppers that we had to tie them up before they fell over.

The Mommyland Farm

Giving the peppers a little help.

We’ve got a few good sized peppers in there but I’m wondering when they’re going to change color? Only two of the six plants are green peppers, yet all the peppers are green. I guess I’m just going to have to try and be patient…again.

My mouth is watering just thinking about eating those bad boys.

As the pepper plants grew I was curious about their leaves, they’re so big and floppy. I think I figured out why and it’s amazing how nature really does know best. If you look at the photo above you can’t really see any of the peppers, they’re all hiding under those great leaves.

This is what happens when they don’t hide…

The Mommyland Farm

Sunburned pepper?

This poor little pepper is the only one that has been left out to fend for itself against the harsh rays of the sun. Out of all the peppers on The Mommyland Farm this is the only one that looks this way. What else could it be if not a sunburn? Have any of the more savvy gardeners ever seen something like this?

How is your garden growing? Are you enjoying the fruits (or veggies) of your labor?
